  1. Most enlargers have a red filter situated so that it can be swung
  2. under the enlarger lens. This is for monochrome printing and
  3. works as a safelight.

  5. A negative can be focused, then the red filter positioned. Now,
  6. without switching off the enlarger, a sheet of paper can be put
  7. in place - ideal for borderless prints. The enlarger is then
  8. switched off, the filter removed and the exposure made.
